What Is an SBR Rubber Grommet?
An SBR rubber grommet is a molded protective ring made from styrene-butadiene rubber. It is installed in a hole, slot or opening in a metal, plastic or composite panel to protect wires, cables, tubes and other components from sharp edges, abrasion and movement.
The grommet’s outer groove fits into the panel opening, while the inner edge creates a smoother passage for the cable or tube. This simple structure helps reduce edge damage, rattling and repeated wear during assembly or equipment operation.
SBR, also known as styrene-butadiene rubber or Buna-S, is commonly selected for applications that require good abrasion resistance, resilience, water resistance and cost-effective production. The final performance depends on the compound formulation, hardness, geometry and operating environment.
SBR rubber grommets are often a practical choice for general cable protection, equipment panels, electrical enclosures, appliances, machinery and other indoor or moderate-duty applications. For continuous exposure to oils, fuels, strong chemicals, ozone, direct sunlight or elevated temperatures, the rubber compound should be reviewed before production. An alternative material such as EPDM rubber grommet, NBR grommet, silicone grommet or another engineered elastomer may be more suitable depending on the application.
The correct grommet should be selected according to the panel hole diameter, panel thickness, cable or tube diameter, required retention force and surrounding environment. A visually similar grommet may not provide the correct fit or long-term protection
Why Choose SBR Rubber Grommets?
SBR rubber grommets are a practical choice when an application requires reliable edge protection, good abrasion resistance and cost-effective molded production. Their performance can be adjusted through the compound, hardness, geometry and manufacturing process.
Protect cables from sharp panel edges.A fitted grommet creates a smooth interface between the cable and panel opening, helping reduce cutting, rubbing and jacket damage.
Support repeated movement.SBR is commonly selected where wires, cables or tubes experience repeated contact with a panel opening.
Grip the panel opening. The elastic body can accommodate small movement and vibration when the groove width and hardness are correctly designed.
Support OEM customization.Inner diameter, outer diameter, groove width, profile, color and hardness can be developed from a drawing or sample.
Provide cost-conscious molded production.Approved tooling and specifications support repeat orders and volume production.
SBR is not the best choice for every environment. Continuous exposure to oils, fuels, greases, strong chemicals, ozone, direct sunlight or elevated temperatures may require another compound.
Performance area | SBR consideration | Design note |
Abrasion resistance | Suitable for general cable and edge protection | Confirm movement and contact conditions |
Resilience | Helps the grommet grip the panel | Select hardness and groove width |
Water resistance | Suitable for many general wet or indoor applications | Confirm exposure and sealing requirements |
Oil and fuel resistance | Limited compared with oil-resistant compounds | Consider NBR where required |
Ozone and sunlight | May be limited in prolonged outdoor exposure | Consider EPDM where required |
Temperature | Depends on compound and design | Confirm actual operating range |
Chemical resistance | Suitable only for selected environments | Provide chemical compatibility requirements |

Custom SBR Rubber Grommets Made to Your Drawing or Sample
Every application has different panel dimensions, cable sizes and installation requirements. We develop custom SBR rubber grommets from your drawing, dimensional sketch or physical sample.
Custom dimensions:Adjust panel-hole diameter, panel thickness, cable diameter, groove, flange, inner opening and outside profile.
Custom shapes:Develop round, oval, rectangular, irregular and application-specific profiles.
Custom hardness and formulation:Our regular SBR projects can be developed from 30–70 Shore A. Formulation adjustments may influence flexibility, retention, tensile strength, elongation, abrasion resistance, compression set and installation feel.
Custom colors:The default appearance is the natural translucent color of the compound. Gray, red, blue and green can be developed, with other colors reviewed from a Pantone reference or physical color sample.
Development from a sample:A physical sample can be used to review structure, dimensions, installation condition and appearance

If measurements are unavailable, send a physical sample, a photo with scale reference or a dimensional sketch.
SBR vs. Other Rubber Materials
SBR is a practical choice for general cable protection, panel applications and indoor or moderate-duty equipment. It offers abrasion resistance, resilience, water resistance and cost-effective molding. When an application involves continuous exposure to oil, fuel, ozone, sunlight, high temperatures or specific chemicals, EPDM, NBR, silicone or neoprene may be considered instead. Final selection should be based on the actual environment, required hardness, cable movement and product design
Material | Common strengths | Typical reason to consider |
SBR | Abrasion resistance, resilience and cost-effective molding | General cable and panel protection |
EPDM | Weathering, ozone and water resistance | Outdoor or weather-exposed applications |
NBR | Oil and fuel resistance | Contact with oil, fuel or grease |
Silicone | Flexibility and wider temperature capability | Temperature-sensitive applications |
Neoprene | Balanced weathering and moderate chemical performance | Selected industrial and outdoor applications |
Custom Manufacturing and Quality Control Process
Custom grommet quality depends on more than molding. Our process moves from drawing or sample review through prototype tooling, sample approval, production tooling, batch molding and inspection.
1.Drawing or sample review:Confirm structure, dimensions, panel fit and installation method.
2.Material evaluation:Review SBR hardness, natural translucent or custom color and operating conditions.
3.Prototype tooling:Develop tooling for initial sample production.
4.Sample development:Check fit, function, appearance, hardness and dimensions.
5.Customer approval:Confirm the sample before committing to full-production tooling.
6.Production tooling:Manufacture tooling for larger-volume repeat production.
7.Batch production:Mold parts according to the approved sample and specification.
8.Inspection and packing:Check dimensions, appearance, flash, deformation, defects and quantity.
This staged approach helps reduce design and tooling risk by validating the custom grommet before production tooling and mass production
Packaging and Shipment Preparation
Packaging can be organized according to product shape, quantity, customer labeling requirements and shipment method. Different specifications can be separated by part number, drawing reference or customer code. Sample and bulk orders can use agreed inner and outer packaging, with labels that may include part number, quantity and batch information.
